About PEACE

PEACE is a project that aims to promote education for human rights, peace and democracy, in Israel's Southern District. Led by a group of EU Studies, Politics and Government, and Education students, this project is directed at granting an on the ground teaching experience for students, developing learning materials, and providing valuable training for teachers.

On the Ground Teaching Experience

As part of the project, a group of young students undergo an extensive training period, to prepare them to enter the school and start educating the region's younger generation themselves. The training includes:

  • From the Academy to School: Challenges and Opportunities in Education for Human Rights - an academic course presenting the historical development of the idea of human rights, different educational theories in that realm, the human rights discourse in our domestic context, including particular focus on specific rights that will be at the center of the project.

  • Field trips in the Negev area, intended to grant the students with knowledge about human rights issues that bother the communities surrounding the university, and to visit and learn about different schools and educational methods in the Negev.

  • Practical training in the field of education.

Following the training, the students will produce a series of lesson plans and special activities plans for different human rights international days, and will teach them in a high school in the Negev area.

Developing Learning Materials

Understanding that one of the challenges encountered by teachers is the lack of available teaching materials as well as the lack of time to develop new materials, PEACE intends to make all its products available and accessible online. In this way, teachers from around the country will be able to download our learning plans, adjust them and use them in their own classes.

Teachers Training

To promote education for human rights, peace and democracy, PEACE suggests training for teachers from the Negev area. From our perspective, these are valuable concepts that can assist every teacher in every class. Thanks to our partners in the Negev, we already held two workshops:

  • Challenges in Ethical Education in the 21st Century - a conference for social-education coordinators from all high schools in the Negev, including secular, religious and Bedouin schools, that took place at Ben Gurion University on January 21st, 2019. About 80 teachers, who are in charge of social education within their schools, attended the conference that was fully organized by the PEACE staff, and included a workshop about education for human rights, with a particular focus on children's rights, given by the PEACE project manager.

  • Education for Peace, Human Rights and Democracy - a workshop for a group of social-education coordinators from high schools around the Negev, including secular, religious and Bedouin schools, that took place at Ben Gurion University on February 5th, 2019. About 20 teachers, who attended the previous training as well, joined the workshop to further discuss the meanings of human rights, peace and democracy in the realm of education, and to extract together the opportunities suggested by these key concepts. During the workshop, the teachers began developing their own projects in light of our in-depth discussion.
